What is JFX in Java?

Java (JFX) Overview:

Development Tools:

Green Screen Chroma Keying

Introduction:

I have been tasked to research and investigate the historical and contemporary visual effects compositing methods/techniques with a ‘Brief’ to use a green screen background and generate a seamless composite by integrating two or more elements together in order to create a digitally fabricated scenario. The most important element of my response should somehow reflect the creative conceptual design skills as well as technical skills both in studio and in software, to communicate creatively and demonstrate technical proficiency as an amateur Visual Effects artist. 

Conclusively, I have to undertake concept development and idea generation to establish a scenario using a combination of story boards, ideas and any other visual representation technique.

Historically the Green screen background was first used way back in 1898 by George Melies an illusionist when he was looking for ways depicting a man removing his own head with a meticulous technique that involved combining frames of a film in multiple exposures. Later in the 1930 a renown visual effects Pioneer Larry Butler invented the Chroma keying technology using the blue screen travelling matte technique which was so impressive in the 1940s throughout the Era of digitalisation. It is widely believed that up to date the same techniques are still applied in most of the films and live Studio Broadcast TV Channels but in a more modernised advanced digital setup like the Use of Computer Software.

Research:

Since this project involves the use imagination and maximum creativity to generate something bold, innovative and exciting, I have furthered my research on YouTube looking out for some of the most amazing talents in the VFX industry. Majorly I have focused on the Up-comings who are extremely good for some inspiration. The main reason behind focusing on the upcoming is that the majority of them do their work individually instead of big companies that hire expertise from all over the world to work on one single project together.

During my research, I came across a video of a freelance VFX artist who goes by the name ‘JFX Production’. Despite the fact that the visuals are not industry standard but the idea of creating a ‘Giant Man’ antagonising and destructing the city on a massive scale is quite breathe taking and incredible especially with a low budget equipment.  

One of the great thing I learnt from this video is that you can always use any background, manipulate it and make it look like it’s your own. Also the colour grading and the combination between after effects  and Photoshop clearly represents his technical ability to use both software to create something amazing. However, from this video I will only adopt two techniques; The shaky effect and the background manipulation.

Another great video that greatly inspired and accelerated my idea was this show-reel from a Polish Visual effects enthusiast and You Tuber ‘ hugoxboss1000′  whose show-reel was somewhat impressive and a cynosure. This video seemed to showcase the easy ways of getting around with green screens and create something incredible with well detailed examples. The part that inspired me most was from 00.32 seconds to 1:34 seconds into the video- the back drops, concept development and visual interaction was just so mesmerising. 

The colour enhancement and the audio that interpreted the flow of visuals was one the big things I noticed despite the fact that the VFX is no where near today’s standards but indeed he tried to express a talent in visual effects.

Idea:

Since it was stated that I have to create a compositing process designed to allow the creation of scenes that would otherwise be too dangerous, impossible or impractical  to achieve, my initial idea is to composite my self into a place that is so haunting just like the human imagination of ‘hell’. 

Development: 

I have come up with a list of the things I will need for the filming and these include: Booking the Green screen Studio, Join a team to help me during the development stage( Filming, lighting and handling of equipment).

I managed to come up with a production plan and set a filming date with the help of a crew from my class (Jesse,Kirsty and Alex). Very helpful !

I didn’t encounter any problems with filming since we’ve had proper lectures with the man Himself ‘Kris’ on how to film in a studio, Camera settings, Lighting and safety on site. 

Pre- production: 

Although I had the option of using copyright free background music, I decided to create my own sound effects and Music. I have general knowledge of using software like FRUITTY LOOPS & LOGIC PRO 9 to create beats and Sounds. 

The proposed software for this project will be Premiere Pro, Photoshop, After effects and Audacity.

Production:

Comparably, I mastered how to create, Demonic, harmonized, Haunting and creepy voices using Audacity. In relations to my Concept I hired a TASCAM and recorded one of my Classmate ( Pete Foxon’s) voice and change it to sound demonic in Audacity of which later I will use as a background haunting voice during the production stage.

I duplicated layers and changed the pitch, treble, bass and reverb levels to create a demonic sounding voice as heard in the final Master piece. 

Premiere Pro

After obtaining the footage from the Studio camera, I had to re-assemble it in the right order using premiere Pro and after I exported it to After effects as H.264 1080p HD 25fps. The quality was still class and full HD.

The Video file was imported to after effects for VFX and other effects 

As you can see I chroma keyed out the background and replaced with an underground train tunnel which was also manipulated to look like a haunting place that is so evil and deadly. It’s in this scenario where I had to add a few extra effects to spice up this whole project. The lightening effect in the backgrounds creates a sense of fear, the fire represents hell and the colour correction is Red to confirm that it’s not a place of joy but a satanic occupation. This video file was rendered with adobe media encoder in h.264 1080p as shown in the Youtube Link below. 

Evaluation 

I’m overlay impressed with the overall results even though I had some thing things I achieved and Failed.

 Strength:

For the first time I managed to manipulate a picture in After effects and make it look more realistic and meaningful.

I have been successful in keying out the background and obtain a crispy clear footage ready for a new backdrop. It has been a very exciting breakthrough. 

Weakness:

I still find it hard to track motion and 3D tracking. If I had enough skills to apply these two techniques in my video, I would have created something more interesting and detailed.

Overall am happy with the final Outcome and hoping to improve with time.
